About Gloria

Gloria Castrillón is the Senior Expert in Strategic Communication for Peace at the Latin American Institute for Peace and Security (ILAPS).

Gloria is a journalist with a Master’s degree in International Affairs and a specialization in Conflict Resolution from the Universidad Externado de Colombia. For the past 27 years, her journalistic career has focused on covering the Colombian armed conflict and peace negotiations. She served as special correspondent for El Espectador in El Caguán during the peace process with the FARC between 1998 and 2002. As Head of Investigations at Cromos magazine, she covered the demobilization of the AUC between 2003 and 2006, as well as multiple negotiation attempts with the ELN.

She closely followed the Havana peace talks that culminated in the Final Agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC (2012–2016). She later founded Colombia2020 (later Colombia+20), an educational and journalistic initiative within El Espectador dedicated to monitoring the implementation of the peace accord. There, she guided her team’s work toward the communities most affected by the armed conflict, directed the documentary "No Odiarás", which tells the stories of women survivors of war working for peace, and promoted dialogues among victims, perpetrators, and civil society sectors focused on reconciliation and coexistence. She also served as part of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) team in Colombia.

As a teacher and workshop facilitator, Gloria has taught at the Gabo Foundation and Consejo de Redacción, focusing on journalism and International Humanitarian Law, conflict-sensitive journalism, gender and armed conflict, memory building, and restorative justice.

She has co-authored three journalism manuals : "Clues for Narrating Peace", "Clues for Narrating Memory", and "Clues for Investigating Disappearance and the Search for the Missing". She was editor of the book "Memories: 12 Stories the War Leaves Us" and co-author of "A Look at Colombia’s Truth Commission".
