About Juan Nicolás

Juan Nicolás Paredes is a Program Assistant with the Latin American Institute for Peace and Security.

Juan Nicolás is a Political Scientist from Universidad del Rosario, specializing in Security, Peace, and Conflict, and Development and Participation. He has extensive experience in peacebuilding, participatory democracy, and international cooperation, with a comprehensive understanding of governance and security challenges in Latin America.

He previously worked at the International Crisis Group, where he researched organized crime, armed groups, and political and electoral violence in Central America, focusing on the intersection between criminal and political dynamics and their impact on peace processes and institutional responses. He also worked with the World Bank on security and risk analysis in the Andean region, contributing to studies on vulnerability, fragility, and conflict prevention.

His recent research examines armed group activity and cross-border dynamics—both licit and illicit—along the Colombia–Ecuador frontier. He is fluent in Spanish, English, and French, and his personal interests include photography and exploring the relationship between territory, conflict, and social cohesion.
